Keep It Mission, Not Messy
The power of calling things what they are.
Hey Friend,
Can I be real with you for a second?
There’s a moment I come across in almost every consulting engagement: a pause. It happens right before someone speaks their truth.
They hesitate.
Look over their shoulder.
And then they say something like: “I probably shouldn’t say this, but…”
And I brace myself. Because what follows is rarely reckless. It’s not gossip. It’s not petty.
It’s honesty. Raw. Necessary. Clarifying.
And usually, it’s the exact thing the room needs to hear but what no one wants to say.
It’s wild, isn’t it? That in mission-driven work, a place where we talk soooo much about impact, equity, and courage, that honesty is still one of the most underused tools.
Missions can’t sustain the weight of unspoken “insider politics,” agendas, and personal feelings.
And the silence? It can actually protect the wrong things when left unspoken.
We all see it:
The leader who's disconnected and shielded
The board member everyone tiptoes around
The toxic culture dressed up as values
This week’s memo is about courage. Not performative, public-facing courage.
I’m referring to the kind of courage that risks (and doesn’t care about) being misunderstood, because the mission matters more than your comfort. Get uncomfortable!
Let’s talk about honesty, politics, and why we can’t afford to “just go along” anymore.
ON THE RADAR
The Silent Politics That Are Costing You Progress
Mission-driven doesn’t mean manipulation-proof. Behind every vision statement, there are people with: egos, fears, and agendas. Navigating that landscape takes more than being “nice.” It takes (heavy) discernment and a deep commitment to truth-telling.
Here’s what I’ve been witnessing (and feeling):
Pretending everything is fine is a full-time job. And guess what? It doesn’t pay well.
Culture isn't what's written in the handbook. It's how people behave when (they think) no one’s watching.
Gaslighting thrives in “polite” environments. Especially the kind where "we're all family" is code for avoiding hard conversations and exposing accountability.
In my work, I often wear two hats: strategic consultant AND people psychologist.
I study the unsaid: the dynamics in the room, the side glances, the people who go quiet when truth enters the conversation.
And it’s taught me this: Organizations don’t fail because people aren’t working hard.
They fail because people aren’t working honestly.
This week, I dare you to ask:
What are we not saying out loud?
What truth keeps knocking but can’t get in? And why?
Who’s paying the price for our silence? - If it’s the community and those you’re supposed to serve…we have a big problem!
Do you want better strategy, stronger teams, real transformation?
Start with truth. Start with courage.
And yes, please, start with you.

SOMETHING TO SIT WITH
“Being honest in rooms built on silence is the bravest kind of leadership.”
Here’s your permission to speak up.
To ask the question no one else will.
To challenge the room, not for the sake of ego but for the sake of truth.
Silence is expensive. But honesty is the investment that pays off in dividends of impact, alignment, and liberation.
Lead loud.
Be brave.
Tell the truth…even if your voice shakes.
You’ve got this.
And you’re not alone.
With honesty & boldness,
